Anyone remember this model that Renny Yater built in ’65? I can’t say that I do, and I have always been a Yater fan (my second board was a 10′ 6″ Spoon that had been cut down to an 8′ 6″ pintail…sorry to say we did that back then). I still have a Spoon that was shaped a couple of years ago – it’s one of my daily drivers. This one is a very nice example of a board from the noseriding era of surfing…thanks to Tim from Santa Barbara for sharing these photos!

My dad donated this surfboard to the Surfing Heritage Foundation Museum in Clemente. He made the board himself while working at a surf shop in Huntington Beach when he was in his 20′s. I believe it was called a Dyno because of the label on the board. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about it except that the three eagles were an early symbol used by David Nuuhiwa, and before it became a single eagle, David had some kind of agreement with Dyno Surfboards. There’s something unique about the shape of the board, referred to as a “rocketfish”. Last year the board was in a booth at the surfing US Open in Huntington Beach, and you’ll probably see it there again this summer. My dad passed away shortly after donating his board and for Christmas, I would buy him t-shirts from Last Wave Originals, so I thought I would share his story here!
Thanks to Carrie M. of Huntington Beach, CA for this post!
